Subject: Finance Committee Meeting Re: Mauna Kea
Aloha,
I am writing today requesting The County of Hawaii will not be involved with state plans for policing Mauna Kea.The
County of Hawaii Police Department is already stretched thin dealing with all that happens here on a daily basis. How
would HPD keep up with call demand if officers are dispatched to the remote Mauna Kea area? This is a concern for
many residents I know.
I am also concerned for the emotional well being of officers who would be forced to choose between their job and
protecting their cultural rights and/or family's rights. Police work is stressful enough without adding these types of
personal stressors. Officers need to be at their best to stay safe on the job and putting them through undue emotional
stress could lead to fatigue caused accidents. There is no need to put officers, their families and local residents at risk
for the sake of state politics.
Please do not send officers to Mauna Kea. Please do not support harmful actions the State of Hawaii or University of
Hawaii are planning. Please urge them it is not worth harming our family and friends. Please remember the spirit of
Aloha and the connections we all share.
Mahalo,
Colleen Mellor
