Subject: Mauna Kea Update from Northern California
Dear Council Finance Committee,
Aloha and mahalo for the opportunity to provide comment on the extent of involvement in activity on Mauna Kea by the
Hawaii Police Department, corporation counsel and county administration regarding the Thirty Meter Telescope. I write
from the San Francisco Bay Area, where on July 4, Interdependence Day,over 500 people prayed for the protection of
the sacred Mauna Kea and to honor and respect indigenous culture and practices on the mauna.
Thank you for calling for an update on how everyone works together to honor what Gov. David Ige in his words has
called "to proceed in a way that respects the people, place and culture that makes Hawaii unique."
Sincerely,
Jane P. Perry, Ph.D.
