Aloha!
County Lifeguard but also prefer to remain anonymous here.As someone who used to surf at Pohoiki everyday,I
can tell you it is necessary to reopen the boat ramp. I live close by and go there almost everyday for decades.I have
seen a big reduction in the sand deposits going on lately.A small fraction of what it was a few months back. The
bay needs to be dredged to remove the sand as a simple tactic to restore access for now. We can work on a brand
new boat ramp access location(with Lifeguards of course)in the future if need be.The reopening of the ramp would
be a very welcomed action amongst the community. It will relieve pressure that the community is asking for,
because the ramp is still there.Important to be logical about this.Lets get that sand pumped out of there. Its going to
be accessible for years to come that way..Build a retaining wall off of the new lava flow that will hold the sand and
rocks in on the new flow.Possibly make a new beach park there as well...This will also help to deposit the sand in a
deeper entry zone than the boat ramp, which will enable the ramp to stay open and free of debris.Just my personal
opinion.I want to see the people of Puna happy to get back in the water here. For safer surfing and swimming too.I
do bot work there currently.Thank you!!!
