Subject: Resolution 233-19 Relating to a Moratorium on the Construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope
Dear Chairman Chung,Vice Chairman Eoff and Council Members,
HPM is a 98 year-old company that is 100% owned by its employees. We are headquartered in Keaau and have
locations in Hilo, Keaau,Waimea, Kailua-Kona, Kapolei, Oahu and in Lawai and Kapaa on the island of Kauai. Today
we are comprised of over 340 owner employees.
In our 98 year history, we survived the great recession of 1929,takeover by the US Navy in WW2, the 1946 and 1960
tsunami's, and the various economic challenges that have plagued our State. Thanks to the determination and grit of
our employees and support of our community, HPM continues to service our communities.
Throughout our history, we made every effort to abide by the rule of law. This included allowing our business to be taken
over by US Navy in WW2 through the War Powers Act. While this Act put our family in a financially difficult situation,
since we were all citizens of the United States of America we did our duty to support our country.
During the decade-long process leading up and subsequent to issuance of the Notice to Proceed with construction of the
Thirty Meter Telescope we have placed our trust in government with the expectation that the rule of law will be enforced.
If the rule of law is not upheld by our governmental bodies, the law-abiding fabric of our great society will be torn and
permanently damaged.
While we respect an individual's rights to express their opposition in a lawful way,the rule of law applies to everyone
equally.
We do are opposed to a moratorium on the Construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope.
Sincerely,
Michael K. Fujimoto Comm. No. , •"
