Dear Councilmembers:
I am in support of Resolution 233-19 because it is the right thing to do. I am very grateful to
Councilmember David for presenting this resolution as well as to the many elected officials
who have come out against the defamation and arrest of protectors who are well organized and
nonviolent. It appears that many other elected officials are trying to distance themselves from
the Governor's mismanagement of a situation that everyone knew would develop as a result of
too many decades of disrespect of Hawaiian culture. Those working to preserve Hawaiian
culture had announced this would happen, TMT's own funded study predicted it would
happen, yet the corporation, UH and the Governor marched on. No respect for the host culture
that has welcomed so many of us that they are now a minority in their own land. If everyone
who lives here cannot respect the Hawaiian culture or better yet honor it, why are we here?
Incidentally, this tide of Hawaiian cultural renaissance is only going to grow, efforts to
suppress it are not only hewa, but will strengthen this movement, one must choose whether to
support the rights of Hawaiians or alien corporations. I must say, because witnessing and
experiencing this assertion of Hawaiian cultural integrity and strength, that I have seen it
promote what I can only describe as profound healing process in so many people as they shed
the indoctrination of an alien paradigm, cultivate the connection between the mind and na'au
and build their own strength. It is beautiful and everyone who has been on the Mauna can feel
it.
The declaration of emergency is an absurdity that is completely unsupported. The situation
does not meet the declaration's own definition of emergency, claims about the protectors are
unsubstantiated and inaccurate and the only threats to public safety lie in the hands of the
Governor and directives to law enforcement.
For all these reasons and many more, please vote in favor of Resolution 233-19
Mahalo and aloha,
Dr. Joe Kassel ND
