The backers of the Thirty Meter Telescope have gone through a 10 year process to obtain the permits construction permits. The courts have ultimately upheld their right to do the latter thus far. In short, the TMT project has done everything that they were required to do. The 60 day moratorium proposed by Senator Kai Kahele is simply political grandstanding. The TMT's CDUP permit has a expiration date of September 26, 2019. If this moratorium is put in place, it would end uncomfortably close to the CDUP mandated deadline to start construction. I strongly believe this would give the State of Hawaii a black eye as far any future investment, and raise questions about the future of astronomy on Maunakea. Sincerely, Vernon Medeiros Comm.
