Aloha no, hope this email finds you in great spirits,
I just wanted to express some thoughts about the construction of TMT on Maunakea. I am
hopeful that you will consider them:
There has been an overwhelming opposition of the construction of TMT—if it is in fact what
the people want, should the government not consider stopping it from happening? I do not
think one could say otherwise. It is about time that the host culture is put first above anything
else as there has been damage and harm to said culture in our history and current day.
Wai in Hawaiian means water. The word waiwai means wealth. So if you have water, you are
wealthy. This thinking goes deeper than anything that has to due with money and that sort of
wealth. Water is life. If we cannot guarantee protection of our aquifier on Maunakea and
something happens, we will lose our waiwai. No one can definitively say the aquifer is safe
with the construction of TMT. The reality is there is a possibility that something negative
could happen.
If TMT happens by way of force or removal from the mountain, the psychological effect on
Hawaiians and the people of Hawaii will be tremendous. Build us up. Back us up. Support
your people.Now is the time.
Mahalo nui for your consideration and time, I appreciate it,
Aoloa Patao
