Subject: Bill 233 Testimony In Opposition To Any Moratorium On TMT Construction
Date: Sunday,July 21,2019 9:27:38 AM
Importance: High
Aloha,
I strongly urge you not to vote for Resolution 233,which asks Governor
Ige to impose a 60 day moratorium on construction of the Thirty Meter Z9 >
Telescope on Maunakea. The backers of the Thirty Meter Telescope have
gone through a 10 year process to obtain the permits to start
construction. The courts have ultimately upheld their right to do the
latter thus far.In short, the TMT project has done everything right. A
The problem is our banana republic government is unwilling to stand up
to a group of obstructionists blocking access to the mountain and a main
thoroughfare crossing the island. -
The 60 day moratorium proposed by Senator Kai Kahele is simply political
grandstanding. The TMT's CDUP permit has a expiration date of September
26th,2019.If this moratorium is put in place,it would end
uncomfortably close to the CDUP mandated deadline to start construction.
I strongly believe this would give the State of Hawaii a black eye as
far any future investment, and raise questions about the future of
astronomy on Maunakea.
Sincerely,
Aaron Stene
