Aloha,
I strongly urge you not to vote for Resolution 233,which asks Governor Ige to impose a 60 day moratorium on
construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Maunakea.
The backers of the Thirty Meter Telescope have gone through a 10 year process to obtain the permits to start
construction.The courts have ultimately upheld their right to do the latter thus far.In short,the TMT project has
done everything right.
Recent polls suggest overwhelming support for TMT,even among Native Hawaiians.Your role,as representatives
to ALL your constituents,demands that you account for not only the vocal minority on the mauna,but also the silent
majority that looks to you to govern according to the will and consent of the governed.
We are a nation of laws.And we are all equal in the eyes of the law.I appreciate the grievances of the Native
Hawaiian protestors,but allowing them to force their minority will against a majority of citizens,a consortium that
has for years played by the rules,and a judiciary that has made its final determination,violates the very spirit of a
liberal government.
It is admirable that you(and others in the political sphere)respect the culture of the Native Hawaiians.But it is
incumbent upon you to balance that with an equal respect for the law.
