Subject: A Letter In Opposition of TMT on Mauna Kea
Aloha and thank you for taking the time to hear my testimony.
On June 4 1985, my parents gave me the most wonderful birthday present; it was my fourth birthday, and we
moved to Hawai'i after years of sailing the south pacific. Hawai'i was my first home. I am not Hawaiian, but
this is my people. This is the only culture I have ever known.
The cultural adversity of the TMT telescope on Mauna Kea is enough for me to stand against it. The
environmental impact doubles down my concern. The past mismanagement by UH appalls me... why are they
continually given such great responsibility when they've proven to not handle their affairs properly? The
physical magnitude of this telescope; the sheer time it will take to build, when technology is advancing with
such leaps and bounds!
I am a lover of science, and know that there is much to gain from this technology. The depths that will be
uncovered, the window into a space we cannot see! But what halts my interest in this knowledge yet
undiscovered is what I can see here and now with my own two eyes. I see my people gathering, coming
together, pooling their energy, pouring their hearts into standing together to appose this telescope. I see a
sacred mountain littered with telescopes that should have been dismantled by contract and are still standing.
I'm told Spain welcomes this project, that the building site is not sacred to the locals. Why not build it there?
I stand up with a culture who has been kind enough to allow me to call it my own. I stand up for my daughter,
so that she has a chance to experience the same Mauna Kea and Hawaii Nei that I have.
