Honorable Council Members:
Though I have rarely provided testimony, after hearing days of one-sided newscasts that show only the opponents of the
TMT project I feel obligated to demonstrate to you that there are people who support the project. I say this for the
following:
1. 1 view Hilo in particular as dying community with respect to economic development. This project, as well as
others, has been met with loud opposition by many who do not even live here. I was born and raised here and I
have seen our economic demise. Hilo and the County of Hawaii was once second only to Oahu in terms of
economic opportunity but now we have fallen to last place to virtually being the "ghetto" of the State of Hawaii.
2. My son is a Mechanical Engineer but there are no jobs for him here so he must live in Honolulu. Educationally,
we push STEM programs but where are the corresponding jobs in Hawaii County?
3. More importantly,what have you done to broaden economic opportunity for our children in Hawaii County?
4. 1 don't see what a 60 day moratorium will accomplish that 10 years of public hearings hasn't already been
done. In my opinion, the opponents will never compromise their position and will do everything in their power
to stop the project peaceful or otherwise.
5. If you must pass a resolution, by all means do so by stating whether you are for or against the project.
Your focus seems to directed only on the here and now issues, shouldn't you devote some time and effort toward giving
our children a brighter future within the County of Hawaii? TMT is not a cure-all, but it's a start.
