Subject: Testimony on resolution calling for a moratorium on TMT construction
Dear Members of the County Council,
Please vote down the resolution calling for a moratorium on TMT construction.
I support dialogue and developing understanding between cultures and worldviews. I support free expression of
ideas. I also support the rule of law. Please uphold the law, arrest people who are blocking Mauna Kea access
road, and allow TMT free passage along that right of way. The demonstrators are not simply against TMT.
They are striking a blow at the essential legitimacy of the government and the legal process. Yes, wrong has
been done to the Hawaiian people, but holding TMT and the rest of the astronomy community (along
with others who depend on access for their livelihood) hostage will not correct the wrong. Lead people to a
constructive conversation about reconciliation and reparations, but in the meantime, please support clearing the
road. Yes, as gently and respectfully as possible, with respect for the human dignity of the people protesting, but
also firmly as required to counter the actions of those who are breaking the law. Right now,people's livelihoods
are being harmed, with decreasing certainty that government will be there to provide confidence that laws are
upheld and that the commerce of our state and county will proceed in an orderly way.
