Aloha,
I am submitting this testimony in SUPPORT of Resolution 233-19.
I believe that additional conversations with the Native Hawaiian community need to be held regarding the construction
of TMT.
I believe that despite the results of polls which were published stating a majority of Hawaii residents support TMT, those
polls were obviously not indicative of the true sentiment of a large population of Native Hawaiians-as seen in protests
throughout the state,the country, and the world.
I believe that the decision to allow an 18 story telescope to be built on conservation land sets a dangerous precedent for
future development on Hawaii Island. Because if the rules can be broken for one project, why not all?
I believe that although a project may be considered 'lawful',that does not make it right.
I also believe in Science, and Astronomy, and that Hawaii Island would indeed benefit in many different ways by shifting
away from a local economy which relies primarily on Tourism.
When i weigh all of these thoughts, and read the various articles and arguments on all sides of this fight, I am left with
this:
When is enough enough?Why can't sacred places be left untouched?When, as the human race, are we going to turn
our attention inward and address the problems we have created on this planet we call home?And just when are
marginalized, indigenous populations around the world finally going be given a voice, a choice, in decisions that affect
their culture,their lands,their water,their history, and their future?
This is an opportunity-after more than a century of gentrification, occupation, corruption, colonialism, and cultural
appropriation-to be on the right side of history. I sincerely hope, Mayor Kim and Governor Ige, that you make the right
choice by and for the Native Hawaiians.
