Subject: Please vote against county resolution 233-19 regarding the Thirty Meter Telescope
Aloha Chair Chung, Vice Chair Eoff, and Council Members,
I live in Kona and I strongly support the TMT. I am writing to request that you vote against the resolution urging the state
to impose a 60 day moratorium on construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope. I urge you to ask your fellow council
members some important questions. How did we get here? Do you remember 2015? Or before that? There has been 10
years of planning, studies, contested case hearings, litigation, court rulings, more contested case hearings and finally a
Hawaii Supreme Court ruling that cleared the path for TMT's construction permit. 2015 was the time to go back to the
drawing board and ho'oponopono and find a solution. From 2015 to 2019 there has effectively been a FOUR YEAR
moratorium on the TMT project. Another 60 days will put the entire project into jeopardy and make no mistake, there is a
lot to lose if the TMT is forced to go elsewhere! We need to think about our kids' future and TMT is a part of improving
their chances to get an education in STEM fields which leads directly to better paying jobs.
Over the past week, the people that didn't show up or didn't get their way during a decade long process have decided the
rule of law doesn't apply to them. They have every right to protest but must do so lawfully. Blocking the access road is not
lawful. The fact Mauna Kea Access Road goes through a DDHL parcel does not give anyone special rights to block a
public roadway. Governor Ige and Mayor Kim must uphold the law. If any resolution is passed by the council concerning
the TMT, I hope it will be a resolution urging Governor Ige and Mayor Kim to do their respective jobs. Protests can
continue but the Mauna Kea Access Road must be cleared immediately.
Mahalo for considering my input,
