Re: Testimony in Opposition to Resolution 233-19
Relating to a Moratorium on the Construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope
Chair Chung and County Council Members. My name is Nancy Carr Smith and Waimea is my
home. I am a Business Owner, a Community Volunteer. I am testifying in opposition to Resolution
233-19,for the following reasons:
❖ TMT has followed all the rules, and they have their permits in place. They have every right to
proceed. The project will bring economic opportunities and continued diversity to our island
community.
❖ The astronomy community creates a small,clean footprint and yet does unique work. We
should be proud that this would be in our backyard. The trickle-down benefits within the State
and Island community are huge.
o• The message that a moratorium would send,would be irreversible.
❖ The existing businesses on the mountain are adversely affected by the current state of affairs.
It's just not fair that the road should continue to be blocked,affecting many. I heard Gemini
was turned away on Tuesday by the protectors. This needs to stop. You cannot be a part of
continuing this for weeks on end.
Since when can you break the law,but at the same time not have any consequences? As a
matter of principal,it's just not right.
❖ It's been said time and time again that this is not about TMT, so let it be built.
The sooner the protectors are stopped from continuing to break the law, the sooner the road
will open,cultural practices can continue, and plans to bridge culture and science can grow.
Many of the protectors are friends of mine, and I am sure the same is true for you. We are not
all going to agree on all issues. That should be okay. The protector's population on the
mountain is I% of our island population, and that is including visitors. This is out of
proportion, and it tugs at my heart,I hurt for them,but they don't have the right to stop this.
I ask that you do the right thing and vote in opposition to this proposed resolution. Stand up for the
law, otherwise what is the law for?
