REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE,WATER, <br /> ENERGY,AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT <br /> DATE: August 6,2019 Re: Comm.No. 364/Res.No. 219-19 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hawaii County Building, Hilo, Hawaii <br /> TIME: 1:34 p.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo,Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Agriculture, Water, Energy, and Environmental Management(AWEEM),to <br /> which was referred Resolution 219-19,reports as follows: <br /> Resolution 219-19 introduced by Council Member Ashley Kierkiewicz requests the formation of <br /> an Apiary Working Group to examine and address beekeeping challenges at the industry and <br /> individual level through recommended updates to County ordinances. <br /> Discussion had on the importance of bees; its criticalness to the cultivation of agriculture and <br /> providing food security and sustainability to our island communities. The focus of the working <br /> group will allow government stakeholders to work with the industry leaders, other governmental <br /> agencies, and the community to help craft and amend policy that is fitting to the industry,the <br /> society as we know of it today, and the future impact of the agriculture industry as a whole. <br /> Co-chairs of this working group will be Council Member Ashley Kierkiewicz and Council <br /> Member Herbert M. "Tim"Richards, 111.
