Re: Resolution abolishing an Electronics Technician position and creating a Traffic Technician IV
position with the Department of Public Works
The Department of Public Works is requesting the abolishment of an Electronics Technician
position, number 00-04840, and the creation of a Traffic Technician IV position within the Traffic
Division.
The Electronics Technician position, Position No. 00-04840, class of work is not meeting the
needs of the Division and there is a need for a Traffic Technician IV due to the increasing number
of signalized intersections and the evolving electronics and equipment used to run these signals.
The Division is also implementing regularly scheduled traffic signal maintenance and retiming
programs, which requires more staff to perform electronics maintenance, traffic studies and
investigations. The Division would also like to provide enough staff to train and learn from the
senior staff to allow for continuity in experience and abilities to manage out island's traffic signal
systems.
Enclosed is a resolution abolishing the Electronics Technician position and creating a Traffic
Technician IV within the Department of Public Works' Traffic Division.

A. REQUEST:
1. This request is to abolish 00-04840, Electronics Technician (BC-15).
2. This request is to create a new position of Traffic Technician IV (SR-19).
E. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
1. The Electronics Technician class of work is not meeting the needs of the Division.
2.The need for a Traffic Technician IV came up for several reasons. More technical staff is needed primarily
due to the increasing number of signalized intersections on the island and the evolving electronics and
equipment needed to run these signals. We are also implementing regularly scheduled traffic signal
maintenance and retiming programs where more staff is needed to perform electronics maintenance and
traffic studies and investigations. Lastly, we want to provide enough staff to train and learn from the more
senior staff to allow for continuity in experience and abilities to manage our islands traffic signal systems.
