Considering almost $700,000. per year of tax money is awarded for an animal control contract, we request that Hawaii Island Humane Society's business practices be scrutinized. The County and the citizens have a right to expect a well run business in animal control, as we would in any other area. We am writing to you because we are very displeased with the performance of Hawaii Island Humane Society. They have a strong track record of not fulfilling their animal control convact obligations for the County. There are assorted incidents continuing to the present of callous and inhumane treatment of animals, a performance record to say they should not be called a humane society. As to management practices, pets have been accidentally destroyed and money bequeathed to a cat care facility disappeared. Please excuse a brief reference to their track record. we want to alert you that this is an agency that needs close inspection and review, and the County should consider giving the animal control contract to another agency, West Hawaii Humane Society.
