At this stage in the climate crisis, I believe the time for burning anything for energy has passed. We have a responsibility to stop releasing CO2,not find new sources of fuel. An incinerator would also lead us to view the Big Island's waste stream as a commodity (fuel for an incinerator), thus eliminating incentives to reduce our waste. I have observed residents on Oahu who believe it's easier to "bum it instead of reducing, reusing or recycling" and feel our county has a opportunity to do so much better. This is a critical time for Hawaii to make the right choices--instead of incineration, I ask you to support the planned commercial composting facility, and grow our recycling programs. As the parent of young children in Hilo, I urge the council to oppose Resolution 301 and protect our island home for future generations. Sincerely, Katherine Inouye Lau Waiakea Uka, Hilo comm. 149.
