Aloha,
I am writing to urge the council to adopt "RES 322 19": RESOLUTION DECLARING A
HAWAII COUNTY CLIMATE EMERGENCY AND REQUESTING REGIONAL
COLLABORATION TOWARDS AN IMMEDIATE JUST TRANSITION AND
EMERGENCY MOBILIZATION EFFORT TO RESTORE A SAFE CLIMATE.
This resolution helps ensure that the county frames its decisions through the lens of climate
change. The state of Hawaii faces a number of pressing issues from climate change,
including: more frequent and stronger hurricanes, rising sea levels, changing precipitation
patterns, brush fire risk, etc. I feel that Hawaii island is especially vulnerable to these dangers,
and the specter of increased hurricane risk, in particular, worries me where I live with my
family in North Kohala.
Similar resolutions have already been adopted by hundreds of cities worldwide and the time to
act is now so that we have some hope of ensuring a good future for our keiki. The county and
state have already made important commitments to renewable energy, but we must act sooner
and I again urge the council to adopt this resolution.
Thank you.
