Dear Council members,
I am writing to urge the County Council to support a resolution to urge higher levels of
government to take action on Climate Change. We are already seeing the impacts of a
changing climate. Around the world we must reduce and eventually eliminate use of
fossil fuels to avoid catastrophic climate change for future generations.
Just last week I attended the Environmental Management Commission meeting in Hilo were a
presentation was giving to the commission on how to take into account and plan for sea level
rise on Hawaii island. The coast of doing nothing to address climate change is far greater than
changing the way we get our energy. Shift to renewable energy might cost more in
dollars now but the cost of sea level rise and relocation is much greater. And sea level rise is
only one component of the impact climate change will have on our lives. I know its hard with
the way our political system is set up to think long term, but we really have to.
Please make our voice in Hawaii heard that we support change policies that will reduce carbon
emissions at the local and national level.
