Aloha kakou-
I am emailing in support of the proposed Climate Emergency Resolution. As an `aina-
practitioner and educator, I have felt the increase in temperatures, particularly in the past five
years. We as islanders must begin to address this climate crisis with the urgency it demands.
Recently, I helped to take a group of students to Puerto Rico for cultural exchange and to
assist with grassroots efforts at farms and community organizations.as they recovered after
Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017. It was a wake-up call for us here in Hawai`i. Ocean
temperatures are rising and feeding tropical storms and hurricanes. We have been lucky so far
not to have experienced a devastating hurricane in recent years.
According to the UN International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), we as a global society
only have about a decade to keep global warming from exceeding 1.5C. How will Hawai`i
lead the way in moving us towards a future that does not involve mass extinction, sea-level
rise, food scarcity and starvation, and increasingly devastating natural disasters, among other
consequences?
I strongly urge you to support the Climate Emergency Resolution, for our (and our future
generations') sake.
