WHEREAS , the preservation of Hawaiian studies can maintain
and promote- the understanding and appreciation of Hawai I i ' s origins,
as well as its social, economic and religious observances® and
WHEREAS, the State of Hawaili has recognized the importance
of Hawaiian oral history and has provided funds and programs for
cultural preservation by offering a Hawaiian studies program at
the University of Hawai' i,- and
WHEREAS, it is important for the University of Hawaili to
give the Hawaiian language curriculum, the basis of a Hawaiian
studies program, emphasis in order to prevent the irretrievable
loss of its indigenous language® and-
WHEREAS, there has been a renewed interest among Hawaiians
and non-Hawaiians over the potential loss of the Hawaiian culture
and language, drawing attention to the need for more emphasis,
support, promotion and perpetuation of the Hawaiian culture and
language among the people of Hawaili; and
WHEREAS, in a fast changing society like Hawaill, it is incumbent
upon the University of Hawaii to take a positive role in restoring,,
. maintaining and instilling a respect and appreciation for the
common Hawaiian heritage shared by its people® and
WHEREAS, the University of HawailiHilo College offers courses
in its Hawaiian studies program which does not culminate in a
Baccalaureate degree,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that the University of Hawail ' is requested to strengthen,
develop and improve the Hawaiian studies program at Hilo College
in order to 'assure the* preservation and perpetuation' of the* 'rich
cultural and historical heritage of the Hawaiian people
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby authorized and directed to transmit copies of
this resolution to the Chairman of the Board of Regents ; the
President of the University of Hawaili ; the Honorable John T.
UshijimaI Senate Presidente I and the Honorable James H, Wakatsuki
Speaker of the House of Representatives®
