Resolution No. 168
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii is the focal point of
geothermal research because of the geothermal activity of
one of our two active volcanos, Kilauea; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii is currently under
consideration as the most likely site of a manganese nodule
mining and processing operation and plant because of the
availability of large amounts of this harnessable geothermal
energy, the result of this geothermal activity of one of our
two active volcanos, Kilauea; and
WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii is the most likely County
in the State of Hawaii for future large scale diversified
agriculture because it is larger than all of the other
Hawaiian Islands combined, with considerably more agricul-
turally productive land available than all of the other
Hawaiian Islands combined; and
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii Hilo College and
College of Agriculture not only provides approximately
$20 million and jobs for the County of Hawaii, but also
cultural and educational leadership, the wisest investment
in the future; and
WHEREAS, by the Board of Regent' s policy set at the
recommendation of University of Hawaii President Fujio Matsuda,
the University of Hawaii Hilo College and College of Agricul-
ture have had their research functions curtailed, an action
detrimental to the previously mentioned economic future of
the County of Hawaii and are being faced with further
budgetary cut backs, an action detrimental to their
educational function,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII that the University of Hawaii is requested
to strengthen and improve the University of Hawaii Hilo
College and College of Agriculture not only by halting any
further budgetary cut-backs but by reversing its policy of
no research functions for them.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clark of the County
of Hawaii be and is hereby authorized and directed to
transmit copies of this resolution to the Chairman of the
Board of Regents; the President of the University of Hawaii;
the Honorable John T. Ushijima, Senate President; and the
Honorable James H. Wakatsuki, Speaker of the House of
Representatives,
