Aloha Council,
I am a concerned resident writing to ask you to move forward with banning the widespread
use of herbicide by Hawai'i county.
I feel it will be most concise for me to state the negatives in a list form:
1.) It is now being scientifically proven to be a carcinogen
2.) It has already showed up in"unquantifiable" amounts in the Ke'ei two well. That means
it's already in our water supply. Also the top soil which will soon be entering the aquifers.
3.) it's being found in majority of food. The gut-brain barrier science is also showing the
connection between gut health, which is damaged when exposed to these herbicides, and brain
function/health.
4.)we live on an island, so whatever is not being absorbed by the plants and soil is going
directly into our oceans.
5.) our children deserve better. To show up at a county park and see a"play at your awn risk"
due to spraying is unacceptable. Poison is being sprayed on our children's play grounds. Read
that again....poison on our children's playgrounds!
6.)with the knowledge that the herbicides being used are a carcinogen and continuing to use
them is asking for civil lawsuits and settlements for the state.
7.)we are a welfare state. If this herbicide is causing illness Hawai'i will be paying to take
care of the sick with tax dollars.
8.)there is evidence the herbicide negatively affects the bees. We don't need a science degree
to understand why we need bees. Let's not contribute to the ever decreasing bee population.
We have other options. We do not need to put the residents of Hawaii at risk.Let Hawai'i start
taking steps to being the most environmentally sustainable community. We could be an
example to the rest of the world how to live with little negative impact to the environment.
I'm guessing this is mostly a fiscal decision. Let this amazing community work together in
figuring out what the reasonable alternative is.
This herbicide we are using was created by a company that also formulated and normalized
DDT and Agent Orange. This herbicide is not safe. Please listen to the residents of the island
who do not want to have extensive exposure to this, or any, harmful herbicide. Let's start
taking steps to being an innovative, self sufficient entity. We can turn Hawaii into the model
of sustainability if given the chance.
Thank you for your time. As a mother and resident I am asking you to please take the first
steps to limiting and hopefully stopping the use of this harmful herbicide on our island.
