Aloha County of Hawaii Councilmembers,
Please vote in favor of Bill 101 to limit the County's use of chemical herbicides.I have been a
frequent visitor to the Big Island of Hawaii to host Hawaii Health Getaways. I am always
appalled by the spraying and the dead weeds on the sides Of the roads and in the parks and
worry about the health effects on the participants I have brought to the Big Island for a healthy
retreat.
I'm sure I represent most visitors when I testify that I don't want to come to paradise and be
poisoned. I'd like to bring my children to Hawaii, but I've learned that children have unique
susceptibilities to the potential toxicity of herbicides, including learning disorders.
I know that acute symptoms of exposure to glyphosate products like Roundup include eye
irritation, headaches, burning eyes, blurred vision, skin rashes, burning or itchy skin, nausea,
sore throat, asthma and difficulty breathing, lethargy, nose bleeds, and dizziness, and long-
term exposure is linked to increased risk of cancer including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and
also aggressive breast cancer when combined with other risk factors.
Living in California, I am proud our state has demanded warning labels on Roundup bottles
and most cities here are banning its use.
Please pass Bill 101 and save your fragile island environment and the people who live and
visit there.
Mahalo,
