Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 350-19, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 350-19, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna Sako, via Communication No. 526
dated September 27, 2019, authorizes the Office of the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the
University of Hawaii.
This resolution provides $14,322 from the Department of Research and Development to the University
of Hawaii to fund its International Workshop on Angiostrongylus and Angiostrongyliasis program.
Funds would be used to conduct educational outreach to researchers, clinicians, and the general public
on the organisms that cause rat lungworm disease.
Glenn Sako, Economic Development Specialist with Research & Development, explained that entering
into this agreement with the University of Hilo will provide funding for the Sixth International
Workshop that will allow the university to conduct educational outreach, bring together international
researchers to present results, and further research into the cause of Rat Lung Worrn Disease, a
debilitating disease that is often misdiagnosed. Mr. Sako noted some deaths have occurred with
paralysis and long-term neurological effects and noted concerns of consumers with respect to the local
produce and the leafy greens possibly having the nematodes that cause rat lungwonn disease.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 350-19, and
recommends its adoption.
