HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0489.102 2018-2020 From: to Greenwald To: Council Testimony Subject: Bill 101 Date: Monday,October 14,2019 1:44:20 PM Aloha, My husband Ted and I live in Kapa'au. We lived for over 20 years in Kailua on Oahu and moved to this wonderful place in part because of the air quality and the abundance of untreated nature. We value our health and the health and well being of all the residents of this special island state and strongly urge the passage of Bill 101 to prevent the poisoning of the land and waters of our island. We have unfortunately witnessed the lethal and toxic results of using these pesticides and herbicides in our environment. It is wrong to think that just because they are used in a particular place their toxic, harmful effects will be limited to that particular piece of earth. Just one example of the unintended consequence of this approach is the spread in our air and water of these toxic chemicals far from the treated site. We are blessed with abundant rain and wind here in Hawaii and these very elements can carry these poisonous herbicides and pesticides into neighborhoods and homes and land and water that are used by all of us...including the especially susceptible keiki and seniors. Please do the right thing for all of us and ban these horrible substances. We can do better. There are many non toxic alternatives to these chemicals that are available. Education and training would go a long way to breaking the habit of using these lethal substances in our islands. Mahalo, Jo and Ted Greenwald Comm. o. •VL Rel To: Ref. mate 0 CT 1 5 2019 _
