Dear Chair Chung and Council Members:
It is my pleasure to nominate Melissa Rose Cardwell of Council District 5 to the
Environmental Management Commission. Ms. Cardwell is a Licensed Massage
Therapist and owner of Banyan Massage Hale in Hilo.
Ms. Cardwell holds Bachelor degrees in English and Women Studies from Oberlin
College in Ohio. She has lived in Hawai'i for approximately 17 years and has made
Hawai'i her home. Concerned about our environment, Ms. Cardwell started the "Plastic-
Free Big Island Group" to educate our community about reducing plastic consumption.
She has also participated in the Surfrider initiatives where she collected water samples
around the Hilo area to test for bacteria.
Ms. Cardwell is not a member of any political party. If confirmed, she will serve to fill a
vacant term to end December 31, 2020.
