SUBJECT: County of Hawaii, Committee on the Handicapped
I have appointed the following nine members to the County of Hawaii
Committee on the Handicapped. The swearing-in ceremony will be
held on Tuesday, February 21, - 1978-, at 10 : 00 a.m, in the County
Council room. Thereafter, the f first meetiing ,.o-f- the Committee will
be held.
You are cordially invited to attend the ceremony and the first meet-
ing of this Committee
The Committee members are:

MR. YA.SH Y. DEGUCHI. He is a resident of Captain Cook' and is the v
Executive Director of Kona Kr,af is. He has served in the 442nd
Infantry Regiment and is a past President of Konawaena Boosters ' '
Club, Lions Club of Kona, Kona Jaycees , and the Kona Baseball League.
He was also the Director and President of Rehabilitation Facilities
of Hawaii, Inc. , and at present he is a -member of the Kona Farmers
Cooperative.
MR. EDWARD A. ENOS. He is a resident of Mt. View, Mr. Enos worked
as a student counselor with disabled children for approximately
seven years. He is retired from the Marine Corps, and is presently
working as a farmer.
MS. DOROTHY HEVERLY. She is a resident of Kapaau and works as Coor-
dinator for the Day Activities Center, Department of Health. She
has had experience in teaching visually handicapped, blind and
retarded citizens. Ms. Heverly was with the Mental Health Organiza-
tion, Hawaii Island Development Disabilities Council, and the Boy
Sdouts. At present she is a board member of R. S .V.P . Council,
Faster Grandparents Council., C.A.P. , and also has re..eived awards
from Epsilon Sigma Alpha, and the Hilo Jaycees for starting Special

MR, ELWOOD I. KITA. He is a resident of Hilo. Mr. Kita served in
the U. S. Army Reserves from 1970 to 1976, and is presently working
as a Social Worker for the Department of Health, at the Waimano
Training School and Hospital. He is a past Chairman of the Hilo
Jaycees Mental Health and Mental Retardation Committee and at pres-
ent is serving on the Hawaii Island Title XX Council, and the Hawaii
Island Developmental Disabilities Committee. He is also a member
of the National Association of Social Workers, the Hawaii Public
Health Association, and the Hawaii Mental Health Association.
MRS , MARY JEAN LINDSEY, Mrs, Lindsey is a resident of Kamuela.
- She is the Administrator of the Brantley Center in Honoku-a.
MRS . NANCY K. MATSUNAMI. She is a resident .*of Hilo, and is the
Director of the RSVP Program for the Elderly. She is a board member
of the Foster Grandparents Program and the Volunteer Action League.
She has served as a member of the AAUW Board, and at present is
active with the National RSVP Directors Association,
MISS PATRICIA LOUISE McKERLIE. She is a resident of Hilo.
Miss McKerlie has*s worked'with the United Way-HUI., Easter Seal So-
ciety, and attended the State Conference for Handicapped in October
of- 1976. She has served with the Council for Handicapped Students
at the University of Missouri', and as Coordinator at the Rehab Hos-
pital of the Pacific (Spinal. Cord Injuries Organization) ,,
MR, LAWRENCE M. YANAGISAWA, He is a resident of Hilo.
Mr. Yanagisawa has worked for the Waimano Training School and Hos-
pital as an Assistant Training Administrator, and is now with the
Vocational Rehabilitation and Services to the Blind as Branch
Administrator, Mr . Yanagisawa is the President of the East Hawaii
Kiwanis, Vice President of the Kalanianaole School PTA, Area Repre-
sentative during 1977 for the District I PTA, and at present is
Secretary for the East Hawaii Kiwanis Little League,
MRS. KARLEEN K. YOSHIOKA, She is a resident of Hilo and works as
a School Nurse for the Department of Health. Mrs . Yoshioka belongs
to the State Hawaii Nurses Association and the National American
Nurses Association,
