HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 182 Draft 01 1976-198000 41 0 County of Hawaii�State of awaiii WHEREAS I the public safety and well-being of the citizenry of the County of Hawaii are primary fundamental responsibilities of the local government; and WHEREAS, the various community associations of the Kalu district have unanimously voiced their number one priority for the district -- the need for 24-hour public safety, both fire and police; and WHEREAS, at the present time the communities of Pahala and Naalehu are receiving fire protection coverage between the hours of 12 noon to 8 p,m., only with two men being assigned to each station; and WHEREAS., the Ninth State Legislature has also recognized the priorities of the Kalu district by appropriating $25,000 and $75,000 for a Kalu fire station and Kalu public safety facility, respectively; and WHEREAS, the present police station is not even owned by the County of Hawaii but by the State of Hawaii and is in deplorable condition and inadequate space -wise; and WHEREAS! Kalu Sugar is willing to provide a three-bedroom, one -bath dwelling to be used as a temporary fire station at a reasonable monthly rent until the permanent fire station has been completed and, thus, we accept this offer so that the people of Kalu may have immediately 24-hour fire protection. WHEREAS, due to financial resource constraints, maximum utili- zation of available resources are a must, thus., perhaps both projects in the Kalu district should be combined to house both the fire and police departments, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it requests the Fire Department to analyze the manpower requirements to assign the necessary staff to provide a 24-hour fire station in the Kalu district with the consolidation of the existing resources in Naalehu and Pahala. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it will not be necessary to assign any high ranking personnel of the Fire Department as there are none assigned at the present time. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii remit true copies of this resolution to the Honorable Herbert T. Matayoshi, Mayor; Mr. Donald Thompson, Fire Chief; and Mr. Guy Paul, Police Chief. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii., this 2nd day of November, 1977. r%xs.
