Resolution No. 218
WHEREAS, on December 1, 1977, over 200 people of the
District of North Kohala, concerned over the potential loss of
its resident physicians held a special emergency meeting to
discuss this issue; and
WHEREAS, it was unanimously agreed by this group that the
absence of resident physicians in North Kohala would definitely
have an adverse affect upon the physical and the mental well-being
of the people in North Kohala; and
WHEREAS, the main reasons given why the present doctors
have or are thinking of leaving have been their extraordinary
heavy workload and their comparatively small income for the
valuable and necessary professional medical services they
perform; and
WHEREAS, should the one remaining doctor decide to leave,
other detrimental eventualities are predicted to occur, more
specifically, the reduced use of the Kohala Hospital followed
by the likelihood of closing it, accompanied by the loss of
employment of the workers, thereby adding to the already
depressed economic condition of North Kohala.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it recognizes and is equally concerned about this
situation and requests that the State Department of Health look
into this matter with the hope that it can ensure continuous
physician services by creating permanent career positions at
Kohala Hospital or by contracting and/or subsidizing physicians
in private practice to guarantee that their pay is commensurate
to their highly special and demanded skills.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of
Hawaii is hereby instructed to remit true copies of this
resolution to Governor George Ariyoshi, Senate President
John Ushijima, House Speaker James Wakatsuki, Representative
Yoshito Takamine, Representative Herbert Segawa, Director of
the Department of Health George Yuen, and Andrew Sackett of
the Hawaii District Health Office.
