WHEREAS, on January 24, 1978, the Fifth Class Order of
Merit, Sacred Treasurer, a bestowal of the Government and Emperor
of japan, was presented to MR. SLiIGERU K. ODA of Hilo; and
WHEREAS, the Fifth Class Order of Merit, Sacred Treasurer,
is conferred upon non-nationals of Japan in recognition and
appreciation of their outstanding and extraordinary services and
contributions to Japanese society and its cultural enhancements;
and
WHEREAS, MR. ODA, the first Hawaii born general contractor
of Japanese ancestry on the island of Hawaii, became one of our
foremost contractors; and
WHEREAS, in 1949, MR. ODA and his beloved wife Tsuruyo,
founded Orchids of Hawaii, a pioneer in growing and shipping
orchids and other cut flowers to Japan; and
WHEREAS, MR. ODA has contributed much of his time and energies
to Big Island organizations such as the Japanese Contractor' s
Association, General Contractor' s Association, A. J. A. Baseball
League, Sumo Kyokai, Japanese Civic Association, Japanese Chamber
of Commerce, Hilo Hongwanji Mission, Waiakea Chuo Japanese School,
and Hawaii Shima Flower Shippers Association; and
WHEREAS, MR. ODA has also strived to enrich the relationships
between Japan and the State of Hawaii by chairing the committee for
fostering a sister-island relationship with Oshima Island, serving
on the Japan and Japanese Immigrant Centennial Celebration
Committee, as Vice-President of the Hawaii Shima Japanese Immigrant
Museum, and supervising the dismantling of the first Japanese
Christian Church built in Hawaii and its reconstruction at the
Meiji-Mura Museum in Japan,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to MR. SHIGERU K.
ODA for receiving the prestigious Fifth Class Order of Merit,
Sacred Treasurer.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
be and is hereby directed to transmit a true copy of this resolution
to MR. SHIGERU K. ODA.
