Resolution No. 228
WHEREAS , Dr. Ernest Harris of the USDA Entomology
Research Division headquarters at the University of Hawaii
at Manoa presented an interesting fruit fly eradication
program before the Agricultural Committee of the Hawaii Island
Chamber of Commerce on December 20, 1977; and
WHEREAS , the State Department of Agriculture is
coordinating a meeting on February 7, 1978, at the University
of Hawaii to consider implementing a fruit fly eradication
program; and
WHEREAS , the cost of implementing such a program will
cost the State approximately $50 to $65 million dollars with
anticipated time for complete eradication of fruit flies within
5 to 7 years; and
WHEREAS , the presence of fruit flies seriously inhibits
the export of agricultural products to the mainland U.S .A. and
to other foreign countries and discourages the expansion of
fruits and melon crops by the agricultural community; and
WHEREAS , there is a definite and urgent need to work
together with states importing foreign fruits such as
California, Florida, Arizona and other states bordering
the Caribbean.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII , that it supports the implementation of a
fruit fly eradication program in the State of Hawaii.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County
of Hawaii transmit true copies of this resolution to
Mr. John Farias , Director of the State Department of
Agriculture; Dr. Ernest Harris , USDA Entomology Research
Division at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; United States
Senators Daniel Inouye and. Spark Matsunaga; United States
Representatives Daniel Akaka and Cecil Heftel;
Governor George Ariyoshi; Senate President John Ushijima;
Speaker of the House James Wakatsuki; Mayor Herbert Matayoshi;
State Senators Stanley Hara and Richard Henderson; State
Representatives Jack Suwa, Katsuya Yamada, Herbert Segawa,
Minoru Inaba and Yoshito Takamine; Dr. Fred Tom, Dean, College
of Tropical Agriculture (Hilo) ; Dr. William Furtick, Dean,
College of Tropical Agriculture (Oahu) ; Mitsuo Murashige,
District Officer, Department of Agriculture; and Jim Wilson,
Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce.
