Aloha,
My name is Richard Berman and I am writing to you to urge you to pass and support bill 101 banning
the use of glyphosate wherever possible on county properties. Attached please see a letter I sent to
Mayor Kim last year asking him to look into this situation. I believe the matter is now only more urgent
and ask that you act proactively, not retro-actively. Thank you for your work on our behalf.
Mahalo,
Richard Berman

Aloha Mayor Kim,
Re: Glyphosate—a.k.a. Round-Up
My name is Richard Berman. I live in Paauilo Mauka. I volunteer with 'Friends of
Honoka'a Park',which is a group of neighbors and people from this area to who
got together to maintain the park in Honoka'a.This is an effort to stop the spraying of
glyphosate (Round-up) in the park where many people and keiki use the facilities and
the open spaces.
I'm sure you have heard of the detrimental health effects of this product (and the recent
court case in California which found Monsanto liable for destroying a man's health).
While much of our efforts have been plain physical labor, we have also used salt water
as an herbicide, with varying degrees of success.
I wonder if the county could try the same approach. I don't know how much is spent on
Round-up, between the parks, roads and public buildings, but we do have an apparently
unlimited source of salt water available.
Not only would this method save the county money, but the health of the public and
county workers would no longer be compromised. Perhaps any additional county
employees needed to make this approach work could be funded by savings from not
buying Round-up.
Thank you for your consideration.
Mahalo,
Richard Berman
