Subject: Use of poison spray on Hawaii Island
Aloha Council Members,
Our family lives near the National Park_outside Volcano. I read in the paper today that the Council is looking
into use of poison (again) along our county's roadways. Our family strongly supports restricting or abolishing
altogether the use of poison, for several reasons.
In the 40 years here I've seen countless instances where poison spray was used in adverse conditions, near
schools, care facilities, in heavy rain and wind and by folks wearing little/no protective gear.
I am a farmer and deal with tons of biomass, much of it invasive. I know how difficult and laborious it is to
mechanically remove biomass because I do it every day. But I also know that each year we are discovering
more about the short and long-term effects of poison on watersheds, children, livestock and on the health of
workers who apply the poison. I's a short-term "solution" which creates even more problems and issues down
the road.
I have had success using non-toxic solutions and know there are different formulas that may be more cost-
effective and certainly less hazardous than the current use of toxics. Doing a little online research will give
interested folks ample ideas and ingredients to consider.
I hope you will seriously address this issue. Thank you very much for your time and concern.
