Dear Hawaii Council,
Aloha,
Once in a blue moon a,bill is introduced that will have a broad positive affect on society,culture and the
environment.that's why I'm asking you to support bill 101 to prohibit the use of toxic pesticides and herbicides on
all county owned parks,roads,bikeways,sidewalks,trails,drainageways,and waterways.
The Cautionary Principle has been lacking in the way the County has addressed issues like vegetative maintenance
of our public spaces.This bill not only overcomes that lack of vision and protection,but it provides a compromised
period to affect that change by allowing a 3 year transition period eliminating any complaint by those who feel they
need time.It establishes a Vegetation Management Transition Committee to guide the conversion to organic
practices,and calls for a complete prohibition on synthetic pesticides on County-owned land beginning Jan. 1,2023
--a period that seems too long for those of us who have been asking for a change in the use of toxic chemicals in
those public spaces for decades.
Organic land management practices can replace the use of chemicals and allow us to be better stewards of the land.
I've owned an ag-related business for over 25 years in Kona.In my plant nursery--in the darkest wetness of
Holualoa--we've been able to replace toxic chemicals with far more benign ones even on a commercial scale.if we
can do it,so can the County.In recent years, even more substitutes for chemicals like Roundup have been
developed,making it even easier to affect this positive change.Our friend was town manager for a large town in
Colorado where these protections have been in place for over a decade.I'm happy to share his contact or other
details to anyone who would like that info.
Not only are toxic pesticides and herbicides harmful to human and environmental health,they are a liability for
municipalities and our society.Look no further than the lawsuit(s)against Monsanto to see how those health affects.
It's far past time for our elected officials to stand up for the health and well being of residents versus corporate •
greed.
