Chung, Council Chair •,y <br /> And Members of the Hawai`i County Council co <br /> FROM: .Karen Eoff, Council Member <br /> Council District 8 -North Kona <br /> SUBJECT: Presentation by Dr. Charles "Chip" Fletcher, Associate Dean for Academic <br /> Affairs and Professor of Earth Sciences, at the School of Ocean and Earth Science <br /> and Technology(SOEST), with the University of Hawai`i. <br /> We respectfully request a total of 1.5 hours for a presentation/question and answer session with <br /> Dr. Charles "Chip" Fletcher, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Earth <br /> Sciences, at the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), with the <br /> University of Hawai`i. <br /> Dr. Fletcher's research focuses on Pacific Paleo-sea level history, beach processes, and modeling <br /> the impacts of the past,present and future sea level rise on island environments. The results of <br /> his work is used by government agencies to administer coastal policy, establish construction <br /> guidelines, and to plan resilient infrastructure. Data produced by his research is used by Kaua`i <br /> and Maui counties in their setback ordinance, and is considered in permit decisions by the City <br /> of Honolulu and the Department of Land and Natural Resources. <br /> PowerPoint material that Dr. Fletcher will use to aid his presentation will be submitted by our <br /> office separately. <br /> Please place this on the appropriate committee meeting agenda for November 19, 2019. <br /> Thank you. <br /> KE/wpb <br /> Enclosure <br /> Comm.
