RESOLUTION NO. 395 19
A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT
AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A
DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO
ASSIST WITH EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH THE 6th INTERNATIONAL
SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP ON RAT LUNGWORM DISEASE.
WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose purpose is to
assure critical habitat for native species and open space for future generations; and
WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, along with the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, is hosting
the 6th International Scientific Workshop on Rat Lungworm Disease scheduled for January 5-8,
2020, at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel; and
WHEREAS, rat lungworm is a disease caused by the ingestion of a parasite, often passed
on from snails or slugs, which can affect the brain and spinal cord and lead to severe headaches,
neck stiffness, temporary paralysis, and sometimes death; and
WHEREAS, experts from around the world will gather to present recent developments
in detection, treatment, prevention, education, ecology, health impacts, financial status of
patients and their ohana, tourism, agriculture, domestic pets, livestock, and the economy; and
WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds for conference bags, educational
materials, and poster-board session materials related to the 6th International Scientific Workshop
on Rat Lungworm Disease; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports the local, national,
and international promotion of locally produced agricultural products and the innovative research
to strengthen the production of food; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code,
Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via
resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity,
service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that
Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 will be appropriated to the Department of
Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with expenses
associated with hosting the 6th International Scientific Workshop on Rat Lungworm Disease.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby
transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this
resolution to the Director of Research and Development and Director of Finance, and that the
Director of Finance is hereby authorized to make the necessary transfers in accordance with the
terms of this resolution.
