Resolution No. 249
WHEREAS , the Hawaii Speech League 's Neighbor Island Tournament
hosted by Kauai High and Intermediate School on February 17 - 18 ,
1978 , attracted nearly 400 students from 45 public and private high
schools throughout the State of Hawaii ; and
WHEREAS , thirteen students from St . Joseph 's High School were
the only participants from the Big Island at the Tournament ; and
WHEREAS , Margot Tomich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs . Quentin Tomich
of Honokaa, and Katherine Keppeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs . John
Keppeler of Hilo , went on to becoming finalist and semi-finalist ,
respectively , in poetry ; and
WHEREAS , Mr. LeRoy Andrews and Mrs . Sharon Sakoda, faculty
members , and Mrs . Elaine Brun , former student at St . Joseph 's High
School and now a student at the University of Hawaii Hilo College ,
spent countless hours coaching the team members ,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it extends its congratulations to Margot Tomich and
Katherine Keppeler for their accomplishment at the Hawaii Speech
League 's Neighbor Island Tournament on Kauai .
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Council commends Hilo
High School , The Parker School and St . Joseph 's High School for
participating in the District IV Big Island Speech League Tournament
to be hosted by Konawaena High School on April 8 and wishes to
encourage all other Big Island High Schools to afford its students
the opportunity to compete in this and other speech tournaments .

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
transmit true copies of this resolution to Margot Tomich , Katherine
Keppeler ; Mr. LeRoy Andrews ; Mrs . Sharon Sakoda; Mrs . Elaine Brun ;
Ms . Jan Kido , Big Island Speech League Coordinator ; and to the
principals of all High Schools in the County of Hawaii .
