HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 264 Draft 01 1976-1980 County of Hawaii--State of Hawaii Resolution No. 264 WHEREAS, the United States Congress has seen fit to design laws which have protected our American flagships against domestic competition from foreign registered vessels; and WHEREAS, in accordance with the U. S. Coastwise Laws, foreign registered ships may not take on or discharge passengers at American ports without calling at a foreign port between U. S. ports; and WHEREAS, P&O Steamship Lines, operating ships of British registry, has proposed to offer cruises between the west coast and Hawaii; and WHEREAS, in prior years, ships of foreign registry have been granted waivers permitting sightseeing cruises which call at consecutive U. S. ports; and WHEREAS, P&O Steamship Lines intends to apply for such a waiver from the U. S. Customs Division, Department of Treasury; and WHEREAS, there are economic and promotional benefits associated with oceanic passenger service which will provide favorable stimuli to the economies of Hawaii, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it supports the P&O Steamship Lines' application to the U. S. Customs Division, Department of the Treasury, for a waiver permitting domestic passenger service between the west coast and Hawaii. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the U. S. Customs Division, Depart- ment of the Treasury and the Maritime Board be urged to favorably consider the P&O Lines ' application for waiver. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that our Congressional Delegation be respectfully urged to assist P&O Steamship Lines in its application for waiver. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii be and is hereby directed to transmit true copies of this resolu- tion to the U. S. Customs Division, Department of the Treasury; the U. S. Maritime Board; the Honorable Daniel K. Inouye, United States Senator; the Honorable Spark M. Matsunaga, United States Senator; the Honorable Daniel K. Akaka, United States Congressman; the Honorable Cecil Heftel, United States Congressman; P&O Steamship Lines; Mr. Reed M. Williams , Graham & James; and Mr. Jim D. Wilson, President, Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce. Dated at Hilo, Hawaii, this 6th day of May, 1978.
