Resolution
WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii' s Institute of Astronomy
with its operations centered at the summit of Mauna Kea, has now
achieved international interest and recognition; and
WHEREAS, this feat which has been accomplished in a relatively,
short period of time, has been further and duly attested to by its
recent acceptance as a member to the esteemed association of
Universities for Research in Astronomy, which is the corporation
responsible for the conduct of the astronomy research program in
the United States; and
WHEREAS, besides this prestigious and important status, the
Mauna Kea operations also provides this county with vital economic
contributions as the program has already invested over $100 million
in capital improvements along with its operating and future capital
expenditures which are expected to continue at approximately
$54 million per annum.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HAWAII that it hereby extends congratulations to the University of
Hawaii' s Institute of Astronomy and its entire staff headed by
Dr. John T. Jefferies for their outstanding achievements in the
field of astronomy and for a job well done.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii
is instructed to remit true copies of this resolution to Dr. John T.
Jefferies, Director of the Institute of Astronomy, University of
Hawaii at Manoa, and Peter Dobson, Acting Chancellor, University of
Hawaii at Hilo.
