WHEREAS, Hawaii 's residents of Portuguese ancestry are celebrating the
100th Anniversary of the arrival of the first large group of Portuguese
immigrants to Hawaii ; and
WHEREAS, the ship Priscilla arrived in Hawaii on September 30, 1878,
with the first large contingent of Portuguese immigrants grants to Hawaii , numbering
about 120 men, women and children; and
WHEREAS, in 1882 the Government of Hawaii signed an immigration treaty
with Portugal; and
WHEREAS, by 1900 the Portuguese population had grown to 18,300, about
12 percent of the total population of the Islands; and
WHEREAS, in 1913 the ship Ascot arrived with 1,283 Portuguese immigrants,
considered the last of 29 immigrant ships which brought groups of Portuguese
to Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii County residents of Portuguese ancestry have contributed
greatly to the development and prosperity of our County; and
WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii County have elected no fewer than twelve
Hawaii residents of Portuguese ancestry to represent them in the State and
Territorial Legislature; and
WHEREAS, in 1926 there were eight citizens of Portuguese ancestry in
Hawaii's Legislature, Antonio J. Perry was appointed Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court of Hawaii , and Father Stephen Alencastre was elevated to be
Bishop of the Vicariate Apostolic of the Hawaiian Islands; and
WHEREAS, from 1930 to the present day, the Portuguese people through
intermarriage, higher education, excellence in business and professional
life and cultural integration, have become completely assimilated into the
mainstream of Hawaii 's life while retaining venerable Portuguese traditions
and values; and
WHEREAS, the Portuguese have contributed immeasurably through their
diligent work, their noble religious and social values, their warmth and
good humor, their sociability, their outstanding ability to live in harmony
with all other groups in the Islands, and their professional excellence in
many fields; and

WHEREAS, it is eminently fitting and proper that on this anniversary,
the people of Hawaii should honor the Portuguese in our Islands and express
their warmest gratitude and appreciation to them for their innumerable
contributions to our County and our State.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII
that it does hereby congratulate Hawaii 's residents of Portuguese ancestry
on the 100th Anniversary of their arrival in Hawaii and commend them for
their many contributions to Hawaii .
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be forwarded to
the Honorable John Henry Felix, Consul of Portugal ; to Mr. Herbert De Luz,
Founder and First President of the Big Island Portuguese Culture Club; and
to the Big Island Portuguese Culture Club.
