Aloha Hawaii County Council Members:
I am Sheryl Ogawa, a resident of Keaau, and I am teaching at Pahoa High & Intermediate School.
Please support Resolution 359-19 supporting Pahoa High & Intermediate School.
Our school is in an environment that has changed due to the recent Leilani eruption. Resolution 359-
19 will provide our students with cultural enrichment to help stabilize some of the effects of this
change. Our student deserve support as they have endured crisis after crisis in an already fragile
culture.
The proposed reestablishment of cultural activities on campus as proposed, Makahiki,to close the
first semester of school will provide fun, cultural knowledge and promote a positive campus climate
which we are sorely lacking and working towards building. I am personally involved as a teacher who
would welcome any attempt to promote a positive campus climate and provide our students with a
means to feel proud of themselves, their accomplishments and their Hawaiian culture.
