Aloha Council Members,
I'm Dove Joans, an explorer with The Explorers Club in the cognitive
sciences of dolphin research, author, and creative conservationist.
I'm writing today to urge you in supporting Bill 101.
Our lives, marine life, tourism, communities, and our children's future
depend on a healthy biodiversity, with our lands not being destroyed by
spraying harmful chemicals, that the Trade Winds are carrying off the
targeted areas, affecting nearby schools, children, homes, and
communities.
Pesticides are also destroying our coral reefs and marine ecosystems with
the run off. There have been many cases where animals and children are
developing cancer and other chronic health issues from the toxic sprays.
Today, more than 18,000 plaintiffs have filed suit against Monsanto in the
United States alleging they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma due to
exposure to Monsanto's glyphosate-based weed killers, such as Roundup.
This is our chance to take care of the aina and moana, before it's too late.
40% of our Hawaiian reefs have already died.
Our reefs provide food for over 1 billion people, and supports over 1
million species.
Hawaii is known for our beautiful marine life, seafood, and beautiful
country, which accounts for the 9+ miilion tourists that frequent our
Islands each year. Spraying toxic pesticides on our Hawaii County Parks
and Roadways only further destroys our home and paradise, crippling the
essential farmers who are trying to care for our lands; those using
biodiversity, crop rotation, and organic agriculture.
Please VOTE in favor of Bill 101, allowing a four-year transition period and
establishes a Vegetation Management Transition Commission to guide the
conversation to organic practices.
