Hi, my name is Michael Hooser, I am the golf course superintendent and a homeowner at the
Waikoloa Village Association. I have lived in Waikoloa since 1974. During these 45 years, I
have witnessed many brush fires, and even helped to put some out. My concern is that the
County roadsides and easements will become a major fire fuel issue without the use of
herbicides. On the golf course point of view, we spend countless hours and dollars on weed
suppression and removal. The County roads border the majority of our golf course and is a
huge source of weeds and seeds. Every crack in the road is pretty much filled with goosegrass,
and the sidewalks are full of a variety of weeds and seeds that stick on your
shoes, legs, dogs, etc. There are seeds that move with the wind, transferred by birds, goats,
humans etc. If the problem is bad now, it can only get worse without the use of herbicides.
The homeowners will have to deal with more weeds, as well as the golf course, condos,
businesses, and the Association as a whole. The cost will rise for everyone, along with the
elevated threat of brush fires. Thank you for listening. Aloha.
