Aloha Council Members,
The costs and benefits of herbicides should be weighed against the alternatives.
Without herbicides, petroleum-powered mowing equipment will be used much more,
producing more carbon dioxide and exposing people to other toxic engine emissions.
With climate change at our doorstep, Hawaii tax dollars shouldn't pay for more diesel
fuel and gasoline.
Modern herbicides incorporate a great deal of ingenuity. Most are based on
compounds that interfere with specific aspects of plant biology and then break down
quickly in the environment. Synthetic chemicals deserve scrutiny, but supposed
health effects that receive hyperbolic attention in the press (and from ideology-driven
organizations) are often wild exaggerations of small potential risks.
Weeds always manage to grow back. Let's be smart about how we deal with them.
Please oppose Bill 101.
