Aloha council members,
I write to request your full support of Bill 101which will ban synthetic herbicides on county roads and parks.
I have been practicing medicine on Hawai'i island for 21 years and I am the volunteer coordinator for the Friends of
Honoka'a Park,a group whose purpose is to assist the county in keeping Honoka'a Park free of synthetic herbicides.
The research is abundantly clear that glyphosate, especially when used adjunctively with other synthetic chemicals,
does significant harm to human health, particularly to the individuals employed to apply the substance to our parks
and roads. We also know that it damages the fragile balance of many ecosystems, diminishes the crucial honeybee
population and pollutes our water supply, the latter causing a downstream effect that ultimately negatively affects
the health of our reefs and ocean.
There is no bottom line that is more important than the very fabric of the health of our lives and our island's
environment. And with a wise approach, the transition is both doable and affordable.
Thank you to those of you who have already voted YES on Bill 101,and to Rebecca and Blake for all of your work
introducing this bill. I respectfully request that you please continue to support this bill.
