REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON PLANNING DATE: November 16, 1992 Re: C-4343 PLACE: Councilroom TIME: 2 : 10 p.m. Chairman and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Bill No. 700 relating to exceptional trees, reports as follows : Bill No. 700 amends Chapter 14 , Article 10 of the Hawaii County Code, as amended, by adding one grove of approximately 600 mango trees to the existing list of twenty-five exceptional trees . The mango tree grove, approximately70 years old, forms a canopy over the county-owned Pohoiki Road in Puna for a length of 1. 5 miles . The mango tree grove has provided a breathtaking experience in the Puna rainforest to many visitors and travelers . The mango tree grove is growing on a county easement running on both sides of the road. Your Committee inquired if the present code has language to deal with trees that become diseased, damaged or unsafe to the public. It was requested that staff research the inquiry. Your Committee on Planning is in accord with the intent and purpose of Bill No. 700 and recommends that it pass first reading .
