Re: Resolution 432-20 Related to Funding for a comprehensive audit and analysis of zoning
and subdivision codes
This testimony is submitted with strong support of Resolution 432-20. We concur that many
issues continue to emerge that clearly indicate that our codes are decades old making them x,
obselete, redundant or conflicting.
I would urge that this audit be expanded to a review of all building codes and not limited to
zoning and subdivision codes.
For Example:The building codes for schools are based upon Industrial era schools designed for
thousands of students. The research around education indicates that small schools, place and
project based opportunites for schools, and digital Hybrid schools are here to stay and the wave
of the future in supporting student success. We find that the building codes are prohibitive and
there is no application available for small sattelite schools that (for one example) students may
drop in when needing extra support with their online learning or to be a base station for the
ensuing community project activites that occur.
All aspects of Government including the building department must regularly review their codes,
processes and procedures that continue to ensure that we support our unique and special
places and are both cautionary for our open and sacred places, environmentally integral and
yet support innovation.
